Google Panda Update Success Story on Recovery

Google Panda's Watching You

Google updated its Panda algorithm again this week, but according to Google it was only a minor change.

Don’t worry this is not a blog post about Google Panda news.

It’s a success story about how Dani Horowitz got her website back onto Google’s first page and increased her traffic after having been hit hard by the Panda.

According to Dani her website was getting about 90,000 hits a day and after the algorithm change her traffic went down to 40,000 hits a day.

The funny and not so funny part of her story is that Dani’s site is not a content farm it’s a forum for IT professionals.

So Dani began investigating why she was losing traffic and in the course of her investigation she found out that other IT forums were hit hard too, and were losing traffic.

Dani got into attack mode and started taking down a lot of content that she thought may have been duplicate content. She dug deep to find out why she was hit hard by Panda.

She also discovered that a lot of her content was being syndicated via RSS feeds and she made changes to that among other things.

How to link build is a difficult task. I normally don’t like to start my articles with a negative twist but it is hard work that is well worth the effort.

You’ll see an increase in your rankings as you develop more and more backlinks.

There’s one thing you should be aware of though, you can’t build your links too fast or you’ll get penalized by Google. This happened to me about a month ago.

This blog stopped showing up on search results for about a week before I realized what happened. Luckily I was able to fix the problem by removing the backlinks and was up on the search results in a couple of days.

Here I’ll list some things that I’ve learned that will probably give you a clearer idea about marketing with videos and how to create the best videos you can.

Before we make a video one of the first things we have to do is to think about why we’re making the video in the first place. Is your goal to:

• Get traffic for your website
• Make money
• Brand yourself
• Teach something
• Convey a tip or trick you learned

You also have to think about what you want to film. Is it going to be a product, a website, you on camera at an event such as a marketing seminar?

Also think about how you’re going to shoot the video. What frames do you want? Do you want to create headshots, what background do you want to use?

Using proper lighting to create quality videos

Lighting is also very tricky. I can’t count the times that I started watching a video but couldn’t really see the person because of the lack of proper lighting.

Shooting Videos Outdoors

I watched a talk with a video marketing guy who said that we should test 5-10 different lighting techniques in order to get it just right.

We should do this test before we begin the actual filming process so that we don’t have to worry about the lighting. I’m sure you’ve watched a lot of videos that were recorded outdoors and those work very well. The only problem is the sound!

Test the sound that you’re producing on your videos

We have both watched videos where we had to strain to her the person speak. What really makes me laugh is when someone is 30 feet away and the microphone is on the video camera!

When you’re testing the lighting it’s a good idea to test the quality of the sound on the video. You don’t want it too far and you don’t want it too close so testing is important.

When the microphone is too close to the mouth what you hear is a lot of static. Especially when the person says a word that begins with a ‘P’.

Google has opened the gates to the new Google+ social network again by allowing people to get in with invitations.

A few people that I follow have gotten in through these invitations and I received one yesterday.

Developers are already creating apps for the Google network. One of the newest that showed up last week is a Facebook app that lets you add your Facebook stream to your Google page.

You can’t reply or leave comments from your Google page but you can click on a link to go to Facebook and leave a comment.

When you click on the link you’ll be taken directly to a page where the only thing you see is the comment box and the original post. It’s a pretty cool app.

I read somewhere that more than 10 million people signed up to get on the Google network in one week and I’m sure that when they open it up for everyone that the number is going to sky rocket.

And there are 101,000,000 global monthly searches for the term how do you twitter. Look at the screen shot below that I captured while doing keyword research for this topic.

I don’t have to tell you that Twitter is one of the world’s most popular social networking sites. The data speaks for itself.

But you didn’t come here to see data, you came here to learn how to get more followers. There are a couple of videos below that will show you a few tricks that will increase your followers, but first read this.

Tweet quality content to get more Twitter followers

First, start tweeting interesting stuff. I know you’ve heard the term quality content so many times that you want to give up. People say that because it is what counts.

You’re not going to get a lot of followers by tweeting affiliate links or tweeting links to landing pages. Save that for later, after you have a lot of followers.

In other words, don’t start out trying to sell stuff.

Some people say to use the term, ‘please retweet’ when you tweet something in order to gain more exposer and attract more followers.

I did that a few times and it worked only once so I stopped using it because it was a pain in the butt to keep typing the phrase. It may work for you as it does for other people, so give it a try.

Only follow people that have a picture on their profile

People that don’t have a picture or at least an avatar are not really serious about their Twitter accounts so don’t waste your time on them.

On the other hand, people that use their pictures are serious and will probably follow you back.

Participate in the #followfriday and the #twitter discussions to get more followers. Simply type those phrases into the Twitter search box and you’ll see all of the people that use those terms.

Another thing you can do is to make your bio helpful. Instead of writing what you do or who you are write how you can help people.

For example, instead of saying I write articles about rock climbing you could say, rock climbing how to, or how to climb rocks better.

People love the ‘how to’ because it teaches them something. Similarly, make sure your bio has your keywords as people use keywords to find other people to follow.

HubPages subdomains went into effect today (July 14th, 2011) at 2 p.m.

I just happened to be studying my page views on the site when I decided to look into the forums.

After realizing what was happening and reading a few articles about why HubPages decided to change its website I got my own subdomain.

It is:

http://ricoramiro.hubpages.com/

Why did HubPages decide to change to subdomains?

HubPages changed its website as a result of the Google Panda update.

I’m sure you’re tired of hearing about the Panda, but the reason everyone is writing about it is because it is an important update that affects search results on Google.

At any rate, the new subdomains will allow individual HubPages to once again rank on Google’s first page. To learn how to create high ranking HubPages please read this article or see the video below:

How do the new HubPages subdomains work?

The way that the new subdomains will achieve ranking again is by separating the bad content from the good content by individual author.

Every HubPages author now has their own subdomain so it is almost like a separate website that Google can evaluate based on content.

If an author posts duplicate content Google can and will ignore that particular author’s subdomain while still allowing other authors with quality content to rank well on the search results.

In other words one bad guy will not affect the whole website anymore which is what happened to HubPages after the Panda update.

Facebook Video Chat How to Chat on Facebook

Facebook Video Chat Now

Facebook video chat is now online, and today being Sunday, July 10, 2011, it is going to be put to the test as Sundays are when most people get online. Will the system experience overload?

There are videos below on Facebook’s video chat features and a test drive video showing how to use Facebook’s new feature.

Facebook partnered with Skype to bring the new feature online to the more than 750 million registered users. The video below demonstrates how easy it is to use the video chat feature.

Just click on a couple of buttons and voila! You’re video chatting with a friend or family member.

Facebook video chat drawbacks

There’s only one drawback to FB’s video chat. You can only chat with one person at a time. Google’s Google+ allows users to video chat with up to 10 people at once. Click on the link above to see videos on Google’s Hangouts features.

When I started researching this blog post I didn’t want to mention Google’s chat feature but if I didn’t it would have been a disservice to my readers.

Google’s chat feature is superior to Facebook’s because Google allows users to include up to 10 people in the chat window. Facebook has plans to integrate multiple users as well.  See the text after the videos.

When will Facebook video chat catch up to Google?

When will the multi-chat feature be available on Facebook? Journalists and industry professionals are speculating that it could take up to a year for Facebook to get it online. I doubt that it will take FB a year to get multi-chat online.

Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg is not an executive that likes to be left behind. He likes to lead, and I bet that by year’s end Facebook will have the multi-chat feature up and running.

Facebook video chat, Skype and Microsoft

Facebook is not alone on this one. Skype, which is in the process of being acquired by Microsoft and has more than 100 million active users online and Microsoft owns 1.6 percent of Facebook.

So it is to Microsoft’s benefit to get the ball rolling on this one as soon as possible.

"We have a very longstanding relationship with Microsoft," said Zuckerberg, who noted that Facebook had actually been working with Skype prior to Microsoft's acquisition.
