How to Nurture Brand Advocates and Keep Them Loyal

John McTigue believes the number of brand advocates you have is more useful than more-easily-accessible metrics like "How many hits?" or "How many likes?" for online marketing. Advocates are those folks who love your brand so much they evangelize it for you, provide detailed feedback, and are often the first to tell you when your latest project or message is drifting off the mark.

Their power is palpable: Meteor Solutions says 1% of a site's audience can generate as much as 20% of a site's traffic through the sharing of a link or content with others, McTigue reports at the Brand&Capture blog. 

You'll know your advocates by their detailed emails or frequent, enthusiastic tweets to or about you. Nurture that relationship, get to know them, solicit views and offer rewards to show them their special place in your company culture.

Here are a few of McTigue's suggestions on reaching out to advocates—mixed with a few comments of our own:
  • Respond with words of appreciation when advocates mention your brand or share your content. They're sure to like it if you retweet, too!
  • Share their own unique content on occasion.
  • Study the hashtags they use on Twitter: Is there a deeper community that you can reach?
  • Ask for ideas and suggestions to generate participation from customers and followers.
  • Frequent their social spaces, and try to continue the conversation elsewhere. When appropriate, take the talk to email, give them a call, or—if the relationship is becoming a product-improvement opportunity—invite them to your headquarters! They'll love the attention!

Google May Penalize Ad Heavy Pages: "Ever encountered an ad-heavy page, where you struggle to find the actual content on that page? Google’s looking at penalizing those in its search results.

The head of Google’s web spam team, Matt Cutts, shared the news when speaking at the Pubcon conference today.

Cutts said Google is testing algorithms that determine ”what are the things that really matter, how much content is above the fold.”

Adding further, Cutts warned:

“If you have ads obscuring your content, you might want to thnk about it,” asking publishers to consider, “Do they see content or something else that’s distracting or annoying?”

Many already assume that Google’s Panda algorithm is already penalizing ad heavy pages. This suggest that this either is not part of the Panda algorithm or that it might be made a separate and more specific algorithm in the works."

Although Google remains the search engine of choice for most customers, you can't ignore the importance of optimizing for Bing—which currently powers nearly a third of all stateside searches. 

And at the Bing Community's Webmaster Center blog, Duane Forrester provides insight into Bing's SEO preferences.

"[There] are a few items we love to see websites doing," he says. "While none on their own will vault you to the top of the rankings, they remain best practices you should look to engage in."

Here are four key ways to optimize for Bing:

Get your RSS feeds up and running. With clean RSS feeds, Bing can see your content more quickly—meaning it will be indexed, ranked and displayed in SERPs more quickly. "Want to really impress Bing? Get into your Bing Webmaster account and insert your RSS feed URL into the sitemap submission flow," Forrester advises.

Mark up your content. Help Bing to understand your content by marking it up according to the http://schema.org protocol. "[T]he better we understand it," he notes, "the more likely we are to be able to return you for matches to queries."

Recognize the importance of user experience. Using the example of page load time, Forrester explains that most human visitors won't notice if your page loads in .5 or .25 seconds—and Bing won't be impressed if you sacrifice content or functionality for the fractional improvement of something appreciated only by machines.

Manage social media with care. "Build your presence so that followers see you as an authority and a resource," he suggests. This requires a consistent stream of valuable content that your customers will want to share.

I know I haven't been posting lately and I want to apologize to my readers. There are a few reasons why I've quit posting every day on this blog one of which is that I started a press release blog.

I've been writing press releases and figured I may as well get paid to write content and publish that content on a blog. It's working so far!

We all know that link building is an important step in any search engine optimization campaign, so in this post I’m going to show you how product reviews can help build extra links to your website.

If you’re planning on launching a new product (or want some exposure for an existing one) getting reviews about your product can be a great way to build new links. The best part is that review links are often deep links to individual product pages on your website which can be quite tricky to get.

The first step to getting your product reviewed is to reach out to people who are active in the blogging community or own a website related to your industry.

One of the best ways to find people is through twitter, as it allows you to reach out to these people without the “spam” label you might get if the same communication was sent over email.

When contacting new users, don’t talk about links right off the bat, try and discuss their company, website, an event or something else they might be interested in.

Link Building Hand & Hand
After you’ve developed a relationship with the person, there are a couple of angles you can use to give your product exposure.

Ask if they have any upcoming events which you can ask to sponsor. Offer to send them a free sample of your product to review on their website/blog.

Enter or sponsor any competitions they are running. You can suggest for your product to be included in the competitions prize pool.

It’s also important to remember that aside from providing links to your website, positive reviews will actually help to improve your conversion rates.

One of the possible drawbacks to this method is that your product might receive a negative review.

For this reason it is important to use this strategy carefully on products that you feel are leaders in the marketplace for one reason or another.

I know people say that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is, but I promise that after reading this quick article you will have a great idea on how to boost your reputation when you create your next video.

If you’re new to video marketing you’re probably wondering what it’s all about and how to go about creating videos.

This article is beyond the scope of video making and focuses more on a strategy that you can use to become an instant expert on your topic and how to use the strategy to create multiple videos.

There is a video marketing training page on this blog and a blog post about a video marketing webinar that has a few good short videos and a webinar that lasts a little over an hour.

So what’s the tip already! Ok, here’s what you do

You need to know what questions people are asking in your niche. Go to forums, blogs and websites in order to find out what’s on people’s minds. The goal is to find the questions people are asking the most and create a list of the top 10.

Of course, you can just make up your own questions and answer them.

Once you have the ten most asked questions do a little research to come up with the answers to those questions.

Make sure to perform proper research, you don’t want to direct people to websites that no longer exist or to resources that are outdated.

Take Two :-)
Remember that you’re going to come across as an expert so there is a little work involved, but it’ll be worth the effort.

After you have the questions and answers together study them for a day or two so that you know what you’ll be talking about in the video that you’re going to create.

Use the 10 Questions as content for your video

When you’re ready to create your video, ask a friend to interview you on camera, or over the phone. The interview will consist of your friend asking you the 10 questions and you answering them.

Make sure to spend at least 3 minutes answering each question for the reason that you’ll need the extra footage, I’ll explain why in a minute.

If you do this properly you’ll come across as an expert and a trusted authority because you’re the one answering the questions. People will come to see you as someone who knows what they’re talking about since you gave them good information.

Here’s the cool part of the video marketing tip

You’re going to create 10 separate videos out of the long video that you recorded with your friend. You’re going to keep the long video and upload it to YouTube but you’re also going to create 10 short videos.

The way to do it is to create one 2 or 3 minute video for each question that you answered and voila! You now have you now have 11 videos to distribute all over the Internet.

If you upload each video to 20 video sharing sites not only will you get incredible backlinks you’ll also gain more exposure since you’ll be all over the place.  Here's a list of 12 'Do Follow' video sharing sites.

You’ll have more than 200 videos out there for specific keywords and you’ll do very well in the search engines.
