SEO Optimization Tips – How Search Engines Work

When you enter a search query into the Google search box and click on the search button you get a list of the websites that contain the keywords you entered into the search engine.

The links on the first page of the results are the ones that are well optimized.

Most users click on the first website link that appears in the results. Studies show that the first three links that appear on the results page are the most clicked on links on the page.

Clicking Behavior on Search Engine Results

Search Engine Optimization Process
People click on the first few links because they see those as being the most relevant to the search query.

The search engines think these top results are more relevant too because of the SEO optimization techniques applied by the web master that created the website.

You’ll see that in one of the videos.

SEO optimization is a technique which helps search engines find and rank your site higher than the millions of other sites in response to a search query.

A good SEO strategy can help you get traffic from search engines by placing you on the first page of the results.

This SEO tutorial covers all of the necessary material you need to know about SEO optimization:

  • What it is
  • How it works
  • Differences in the ranking criteria

How Search Engines Work

The first thing we have to think about is that search engines and people see web pages differently. Search engines are text and link driven.

Although technology advances rapidly, search engines are far from being intelligent enough to view a page as humans do. A human sees the beauty of a cool design or enjoys the videos on a page.

Search engines crawl the web, looking at particular site items (mainly text) to get an idea of what a site is about.

Search engines perform several activities in order to deliver search results:

Search Engines Google, Yahoo, MSN
  • Crawling
  • Indexing
  • Processing
  • Calculating relevancy
  • Retrieving

This task is performed by a piece of software, called a crawler or a spider (or Googlebot, as is the case with Google).

Spiders follow links from one page to another and index everything they find on their way.

After a page is crawled, the next thing the search engine does is index its content. The indexed page is stored in a database from where it can later be retrieved and displayed in the search results.

SEO Optimization Keywords and Search Engines

Essentially, the process of indexing is identifying the words and expressions that best describe the page and assigning the page to particular keywords.

Sometimes the search engines may not get the meaning of a page right but you can help them by SEO optimizing it and making it easier for the engine to classify your pages correctly and for you to get higher rankings.

When a search request is typed into the search box, the search engine processes it by comparing the search string with the indexed pages in its database.

SEO Analytics Flow Chart
Since it is likely that more than one page contains the search string, the search engine starts calculating the relevancy of each of the pages in its index with the search string and the keywords on the pages.

There are several algorithms to calculate relevancy

Each of these algorithms has different relative weights for common factors such as:

  • Keyword density
  • Links
  • Meta tags

That is why different search engines give different search results pages for the same search string. They all have different algorithms but essentially work the same way by using keywords in different ways.

The last step in the search engine’s activity is retrieving the results.

That’s nothing more than displaying them in the browser as a clickable link. Ok. Now on to the videos.

How to Do Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for an E-Commerce Site - with Rob Snell (7:02) video - by Dr. Ralph F. Wilson

In this video interview e-commerce expert Rob Snell explains how to prioritize the limited time you have to spend on search engine optimization (SEO) for an online store. The key, he says, is to identify your top converting keywords and pages and focus there.

Instead of just looking at only traffic, Snell says, it's important to identify the keywords and phrases that actually result in traffic AND conversions, that is, sales. Then identify which web pages are driving conversions from search engine traffic.

You can determine which of your product pages are in the Google index by typing into the Google search box "site:yourdomainname.com" and Google will list all of your pages in their index.

We found that of about 15,000 products, our top 200 web pages were driving 80-90% of the revenue. So the focus needs to be on the pages that are driving your revenue. Analytics for a Yahoo! show you the revenue for your entry pages. Google Analytics can be configured to track revenue as well.

Then on your homepage, use the top converting keywords to link to your top converting web pages.
